In spite of being WFPB for nearly two years, we have noticed that we have to adhere to a fairly strict diet.
If we deviate and go out to eat, we realize we are eating GMO’s and the food probably has some sort of animal product, oil or chemical we are trying to avoid.
My husband and I recently completed the 3-6-9 liver diet in Anthony William’s Liver Rescue. Generally we stay on the detox for several more days and then do the Heavy Metal cleanse.
This time it was Fourth of July week and our 16th wedding anniversary. We had something planned every day including dinner out several times for the week. We didn’t cheat but we did have tortilla chips, pizza with non dairy cheese, veggie fajitas, margarita’s and beers.
Normally we avoid gluten, corn products, bread in general, oil, processed foods, food additives and alcohol. I think the excessive corn products added oil and dehydration from the alcohol triggered a diverticulitis attack in Harry. Harry loves his tortilla chips and will eat them when ever he gets a chance!
The normal prescription for diverticulitis is to take antibiotics, avoid alcohol and not eat any seeds or nuts. Some doctors will say to avoid all raw vegetables and stick with a bland diet of soft food.
A hospital might serve puddings, jello, broth, grits, soft boiled eggs, mashed potatoes, boiled chicken, gravy and bread. I witnessed this diet prescribed to a friend of mine who was having similar issues while hospitalized.
Personally I think the fiber and fluids are needed now more than ever. I am preparing Harry’s meals without any gluten, corn products, bread in general, oil, processed foods, food additives and alcohol. I also started peeling thin skinned fruits like tomatoes and peppers. I agree with avoiding seeds and nuts but I think fiber and hydration is key!
I am giving him cherry juice for inflammation and pain. I am avoiding cabbage and foods that might cause excess gas and adding kombu broth or (real) ginger ale to his diet. Today he had creamy (blended) potato soup, and a salad of field greens, carrot, daikon radish, apples and asparagus for lunch.
The first glass of cherry juice helped immensely and he is already feeling much better.
It just goes to show us how unhealthy the American diet has become. Nearly every time we get off track and enjoy take out or restaurant food, we can tell within a day or two. I cannot imagine not controlling our own diets anymore.
