What are your comfort foods?

Warm, comforting foods? Familiar and nostalgic meals or just something we crave? Does it always mean fat or sugar laden foods? Have you managed to find WFPB versions of your child hood favorites?

Do we crave warm, comforting foods when it is cold or because we need more fat or energy? If you are depressed, do you crave the same comfort foods? (I miss ice cream!).

I was giving this some thought while looking out the window at the cold, dreary sky. It was threatening snow and I craved something warm instead of my usual salad for lunch. However I gave into soup and salad. My comforting tortilla soup and a Mexican Cobb salad with hot chili beans fit the bill

The soup was a perfect choice.

The warmth went straight to my bones. Soup, tortilla

So what made this so comforting? Was it the warmth? The fat in the avocado or carbs from the tortilla? Perhaps it was the warming spices.

Although, the meal was not heavy like most comfort foods I think of.

Of course that is the beauty of eating plant based food. Generally not heavy.

I consider a comfort food something that can be warming, familiar, nostalgic, and deeply satisfying.

Here is a list of some of my comfort foods:

lasagna, artichoke

Mashed Potatoes,

Lasagna

Mushroom Pot Roast Soup or Irish Stew

Goulash

cheese, enchilada, mexican Enchiladas

Jackfruit Tamales

Chili

Image of a salad with pizza croutonsMaybe since going plant based and eating salads most days, I have added a few salads to my list of comfort foods. Salad with pizza croutons, Deli Style Salad, and Thai Udon Noodle Salad.

What all of these comfort foods have in common is that they are not all raw food. They are cooked or have carbs, fatty vegetables or nuts added to these meals. Somehow, raw, cold food just doesn’t seem comforting.

Comfort food and Covid-19.

These are all reminders of my past way of eating. I would consider most of my recipes to be low fat and low carb and comforting! Eating them every day could be potentially fattening, but not as much as a non WFPB version.

With the Covid-19 shut-in, we have indulged in more of my comfort foods. I don’t know why they call it Covid-19 when people are averaging a weight gain of 43 pounds during this pandemic.

I try to have a salad every day and add a few raw elements to my dinner plate. We do the lemon water and celery juice every day and make sure to have a piece of fresh fruit.

Most of my recipes for these comfort foods are available on Snap Pea Sheep. I hope meals that bring comfort to me will become favorites in your kitchen.
