A Beetlejuice sequel was the big surprise for the fall of 2024.
A friend of mine just celebrated her birthday in style. She decided to have a Beetlejuice theme party! We all went to the theatre to see the movie and were treated to a fajita buffet.
She decided to have an after “after” in here home and asked if I would make charcuterie trays for her party.
These are obviously NOT whole food, plant based. but they were fun and might be inspiring.
Just a side note, Beetlejuice 2 was so much fun. Go see it if you get a chance.
Beetlejuice
Mr. Beetlejuice himself is the feature in the first tray.
The only foods on this platter that is plant based is the purple kale, moon drop grapes and olives. Sorry but this was not ordered for a plant based crowd and had to have something for everyone.
The crackers, queso face and string cheese stripes are low fat cheese for those who eat a little cheese for protein. The tie is Sage Derby cheese.
The pepperoni and meat sticks are made with turkey. I chose mortadella because I enjoyed it in Italy. It wasn’t anywhere close though and I noticed it didn’t go over well.
Radicchio leaf and olives were used for the eyes and black pepper and olives ere used for the mouth and shadows.
The Worm
Black and white are difficult colors for food.
Sushi won out to make the sand worm. Again, this platter had little plant based other than the sushi, a little kale and some ginger.
All of the sushi and cream cheese pinwheels were store bought and made just hours before the party.
The shrimp were wild Argentinian shrimp. They were simply cleaned and then boiled in water seasoned with Old Bay.
By the way, these trays are 11X14 inch trays by Farberware. They have plastic snap-on lids so you can transport your trays easily and don’t have to jostle you tray getting the lid off. Check them out here. The size made it easy to transport these in insulated bags with a few ice blocks in them.
Bob
Bob’s face was made with guacamole and was totally plant based, with exception of the mozzarella eyes. The mouth was olives. The hair was lean roast beef. Again, other than olives, nori, squid ink, black rice or chocolate, there’s not much black food that I could think of.
Interestingly enough, the guacamole wasn’t even touched by the party goers. Maybe they took pity on Bob.
The pumpernickel bread was on the platter for mini sandwiches but was barely touched.
The focus of this tray was turkey or roast beef on pumpernickel with mustard.
Sage derby cheese was added for a pop of color. People tried this out of curiosity as Sage Derby is not a common cheese. It is mild like a cheddar with just a hint of sage.
I planned to have cherry tomatoes and pickles on the tray but ran out of time – and room.
At nearly every party, I take a vegetable and fruit tray so I know there is going to be something I can eat. I only had four trays and this was my first time using them. For this party, I assumed there would be other food but found that nothing else was provided other than cake. It was more than enough for the 30party goers.
Obviously, this was a party of carnivores, and all of the meat and cheese were picked over.
Dessert
The dessert tray used store bought back and white cookies and striped brownies.
Black berries. walnuts and walnuts finished off this plate.
Dates were turned into cock roaches with four snips from scissors on each side. I only put five on there. They were too realistic though. Everyone admired them but only the hosts were brace enough to eat them.
There was nothing left from this tray. The host had a fabulous cake too, so it was surprising to me.
Preparing food for others is always a challenge.
I never push my food preferences in my choices other than using quality ingredients. Holiday season is right around the corner and Halloween is first up.
