My mother always made a mince meat pie for the holidays. She made so many other pies that she ended up with the mince meat all to herself. She would eat it like a sundae with ice cream and a rum sauce! I found it way too rich but I always snitched a few bites.

My family always wanted pumpkin, pecan or apple pies. Generally all three would be found on the table, regardless how few people were present.

This year, thanks to Covid-19, our holiday gathering consisted of two! So I combined pecan and apple with mince meat and a new favorite was created. Harry LOVED it!

Minced meat is a mixture of apples and raisins sautéed together with spices like clove and allspice. It is easy to make but I used a jar of Cross and Blackwell Vegan mince meat

Mince meat, apple-pecan pie

Three good pies in one will make this a new favorite. The mince meat is rich and spicy with a hint of rum. The granny apples are tart and crisp. The pecans and pie crust provide some crunch and balance out the sweetness. Above all, this dessert is incredibly simple!

Equipment

  • Open pie pan or casserole dish

Ingredients

  • 1 Pie shell (raw) I used a pre-made frozen, vegan, pie shell
  • 1/2 Jar Mince Meat I used Crosse and Blackwell vegan mincemeat
  • 4 Granny apples
  • 1/2 Jigger Dark rum
  • 1/2 Cup Pecan pieces
  • 1 Tbsp Organic cane sugar Optional

Instructions

  • Peel and core apples. Slice into 1/4" slices. Put about 3 table spoons of water in your pan then evenly lay down your slices of apple. Add the next layer of apples across the first layer so air and steam can move through the apples. You may have 2 or 3 layers of apples depending on the size of your pan.
  • Empty 1/2 the jar of mince meat into a bowl. Add in rum and pecans then stir to blend.
Spoon the mince meat on top of your apples.
  • I used just the bottom of my pie crust and sliced it into 1/2" slices. I then placed them on my pie lattice style. I used the crust sides for another pie. You can also roll it out and cover the whole pie. If you have a whole crust, to poke some holes in it for steam.
  • Sprinkle sugar over the crust (optional). This crystallizes and adds texture to the crust.
  • Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes or until crust is golden.

I've never heard of this combination before and I don't know why. It is delicious!
My internet search resulted in dozen's of recipes for mince meat. Some mince meat actually has beef suet in it so make sure you look for vegan.
The ingredients for mince meat seem to vary considerably. The kind I used was mainly apple, orange, raisins, allspice and sugar. I've seen recipes with coconut, prunes, berries, pineapple, figs, peaches, clove, cardamom, and even brisket!
My pie was more like a cobbler as it had no bottom crust.  Hey, I wanted it easy!

. It has sugar in it so if sugar is a concern, make your own.
